Top 5 Tracks of the Week

1. Ishmael Ensemble – Songs For Knotty: South Londoner Ishmael returns to Banoffee Pies with a six piece ensemble and a full length LP to boot (out today). The record was made in loving memory of an old friend and ‘Songs For Knotty’ is the highly poignant title track.

For the Londoners amongst you, Friday 10th February is the day to bookmark with not one but two appearances from all involved. There’ll be a live showcase from Ishmael at Sounds Of The Universe with DJ support from the Banoffee Pies gang, then they’ll both be digging deep into their record collections at Brilliant Corners later on in the evening. Both events are free and sound top-notch.

2. Cin Cin 006 – New Jackson/Elliott Lion Double whammy here. The sixth release on Cin Cin is a split 12” between Dubliner New Jackson and Manchester-based Elliott Lion, he of Editors fame don’t you know? We were treated to the first two tracks this week and they’re both ace, the deep and dreamy, David Bowie-sampling ‘Electric Blue’ complimenting the driving ‘Athens’ nicely.

3. COEO – Mydonna: Munich-based duo COEO bring the disco flavours in the fun-filled ‘Mydonna’, due for release on 17th February via Berlin’s Toy Tonics.

4. Sampha – (No One Knows Me) Like The Piano: Sampha dropped the vid for the achingly beautiful ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’ a few days back to coincide nicely with the relase of his debut album, ‘Process’. It’s out today on Young Turks, go find it.

5. Jesper Ryom – Pacer: French record label Delicieuse Records have been unearthing an eclectic blend of new music since 2012 and this March they’re dropping their first VA compilation to celebrate the wealth of musical discoveries they’ve made. The album’s called ‘Liquors #1’ and Jesper Ryom’s ‘Pacer’ is the first taster.

The mix that pricked our ears this week is by Seb Wildblood, over an hour of 100% forthcoming material on Church, Coastal Haze and All My Thoughts:

Jamie xx – Loud Places (John Talabot’s Loud Synths Reconstruction)

If there is such a thing as a banker of a remix, it’s John Talabot on Jamie xx:

JT’s “Loud Synths Reconstruction” of ‘Loud Places’ is coming out on a Young Turks 12” soon and it’ll sit nicely alongside your copy (we know you’ve got one) of ‘In Colour’.

Jamie xx – Loud Places ft Romy

The news of Jamie xx’s first solo album prompted a profound excitement here at HD. There are few artists out there who can mesmerise you with the moody pop of the XX on the walk home then have you cutting a rug later to pretty much anything from grime to hardcore (Proof = here).

‘Loud Places’ is the latest single to be aired off his new album ‘In Colour’ due out on Young Turks June 1st. Here he finds a beautiful middle ground, using his production talent to showcase all sides of Romy’s voice from the melancholic to the euphoric. The attention to detail on production is noticable, first letting Romy’s distinctive voice do the work alongside a sparse bass drum before throwing everything from handclaps to vocal loops together towards the end. All in all, it’s a triumph, and an exciting prospect for the summer months.

The album tracklist includes some old friends in Romy and Oliver Sim, alongside the more unexpected faces of Jamaican Dancehall legend Popcaan and eccentric Atlanta rapper Young Thug. Here’s hoping for an all-star album tour over the summer.

SBTRKT feat. Raury – Higher

Since we last updated you on HD favourite SBTRKT, he’s been a busy man, spoiling us with details of his new album. ‘Wonder Where We Land’ is set for release on September 22nd and judging by what we’ve heard so far, it’s time to get hyped.

This latest album teaser has come in the form of a collaboration with prodigious 18-year-old rapper Raury. With other partners on the album ranging from A$AP Ferg to soulful youngster Denai Moore, it feels like Aaron Jerome is ready to put his well-known production skills to the test.

September 22nd can’t come quickly enough over here.

SBTRKT – TEMPORARY VIEW (ft. Sampha)

Few artists prompt as much excitement here at HD as Aaron Jerome a.k.a SBTRKT.  Following the complex and atmospheric Transitions series, his latest tune ‘Temporary View’ marks a return to his melodic best, bringing in his old buddy and long-time collaborator Sampha in a soulful reworking of his instrumental track ‘Resolute’. Sampha’s vocals float right over the top of SBTRKT’s immaculate production in a taste of what’s to come in his hotly-anticipated sophomore album.

All signs point towards a Young Turks release later this year but he’s keeping his cards pretty close to his chest as you’d expect.  Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Jamie xx – Sleep Sound

New stuff from Jamie xx always makes us sit up in our bed with laptop propped up on our knees at our desk. This is no different.

‘Sleep Sound’ is one of a double-sided release coming up 5th May on, where else, Young Turks. It’s another late night, sensual jam; the xx but for an after-party rather than a romantic evening with your significant other/others.

For something a little longer, check out the Turks’ FBI Radio Takeover featuring Jamie, Four Tet, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and Sampha. Mouth-watering.

SBTRKT – IMO

Short n sweet this one.

SBTRKT, with whom we’re still a little luvved up after his storming Beacons set, has put out two and a half minutes of ambient goodness from his album recordings. There are some suitably tripped-out visuals to go with it too, found here. Far out.

Lost Scripts – I’ll be Watching You

We’ll be watching this.

London lads Young Turks have kicked off a new series of 12”s with this deep, urgent collaboration between old pals John Talabot and Pional, galavanting around as Lost Scripts. ‘I’ll be Watching You’ is accompanied on the September 16th release by ‘Sun’ from Koreless’s recent ‘Yugen’ EP:

We’re expecting big things from future releases on the YT2013 showcase given that the xx, FKA Twigs and SBTRKT are all to be found kicking about on the Young Turks roster…

FKA twigs – Water Me

Calm down, calm down.

We know you’re psyched about Human Drizzle Presents tomorrow (lordy we are) but it’s probably best to leave something in the tank, so here’s some downbeat electronica for you. FKA twigs, the mysterious UK vocalist and producer who self-released the confusingly-titled ‘EP’ EP last year, is back with another track, ‘Water Me’, from her upcoming release. Guess what it’s called?

‘EP2’ is out in September on Young Turks (that’s how you know it’s good) and it seems Kanye West affiliate Arca has had his fingers in this particular pie. Here’s the other pre-shared track they’ve done together, ‘How’s That’:

S’all good.

Sampha – Without

Out on Young Turks on July 29th, the ‘Dual’ EP is shaping up nicely. The latest teaser is ‘Without’ is a skittering piece of electronica with more than a shade of his breakthrough collaborations with SBTRKT.

This follows the poppier slice of emotion he announced the EP with, ‘Indecision’:

And, if that isn’t enough, he recently featured on a new Drake track, sprinkling some of his vocal magic on an otherwise pedestrian effort from the Canadian:

He’s been a selflessly busy boy but it sounds like his own stuff is worth the wait.
