Deejay Deer – Natur

Come on out pal, it’s safe out here:

Numbers new man Deejay Deer is said to be “hiding in the woods to protect himself from all the fake producers in the city” but we reckon he’d hold his own out here. This is a surprisingly competent debut EP for this “Bavarian” beatmaker and the ruminant mammal theme makes us think this could be yet another alias for your boy Caribou. There’s certainly a strong streak of Caribou’s percussive, melodic soundscapes over the two tracks.

Does it matter? No. Natur is a an excellent EP and it’s out NOW.

Hudson Mohawke – Brainwave

It’s ok guys, the weekend’s here.

Feeling a little sore-headed after thinking the weekend started today? This new one from Hudson Mohawke should help. ‘Brainwaves’ moves away from the glitchy abrasiveness of ‘Chimes’, our other taster from his upcoming Warp EP, and paints a picture for you. Soaring choral backing nicely compliments an ambient loop that never drops and is all the better for it.

If you like your HudMo a little longer and more dancefloor, enjoy this recent Boiler Room you animal:

Hudson Mohawke – Pleasure

We apologise in advance for the intense feeling of missing out when you’ve read this post.

Following a limited run vinyl release back in 2011, ‘Pleasure’ is a Janet Jackson-flecked piece of joy from Numbers man Hudson Mohawke. Please, please listen to it before kicking off your Bank Holiday weekender:

The imprint that put out this goodtimes tune was the specially created label, Pleasure Principle. This has now morphed into the all-star surfing holiday festival in Newquay that kicks off next month, and ‘Pleasure’ is a teaser for that. The three days are jam-packed with essential listening, not least HD regulars from Joy Orbison, TNGHT and Rustie. To assuage the FOMOs, get a ticket here or try your luck with FACT’s ticket giveaway here.

In case it wasn’t clear, we wish we were going.

Spencer – ‘Hidden Depths Of Numbers’ Mix

Another day, another amazing Glasgow-based label mix. Numbers, a name we’ve mostly encountered through their release of Jamie xx’s ‘Far Nearer’ and Deadboy’s ‘If U Want Me’, are the latest curators in the ‘Hidden Depths’ event series. To help us get all excited, Numbers boss Spencer has put together a storming preview set.

The mix joins the dots between the night’s DJs, blending Chicago house honcho Lil Louis with newer cuts from Artwork (one third of Magnetic Man) and Numbers residents Jackmaster and Spencer. Worth a special mention is an edit of Sophie’s ‘Nothing More To Say’, which Jackmaster tells us was made specially for him. Lucky begger…

The night is next Wednesday (12th September) at Village Underground in London. At £5, it’d be rude not to…
