Ikonika – Aerotropolis

You know what you need to hear? The new Ikonika album. Luckily, it’s here for you (via The Guardian):

‘Aerotropolis’, inspired by her time DJing in an airport city, is out on Hyperdub July 29th and is essential listening. Lighter than her 2010 debut, it has more nostalgic, guilty influences. She seems to be smiling more in pictures these days too. Here’s a GTA-esque vid for ‘Mr Cake’, a track title Abdel-Hamid claims was inspired by a shit cake in a Nunhead bakery. Sounds inspirational.

Finally, that lot over at Abeano are putting on a details-light night at The Shacklewell Arms on Thursday featuring Ikonika herself. We suggest you join us there.

Troumaca – Layou (LV Remix)

Morning all.

A name you’ll know, and one you’ll know very soon. That’s Hyperdub beatmakers LV and new Brownswood signing Troumaca summed up for ya.

The LV lot have pulled out and blown up the Caribbean feel to Troumaca’s next single from their upcoming ‘The Grace’ EP. It works. Here’s the original, and the totally fun ‘The Sun’, for a more relaxed start to Monday:

Expect a fair few Gilles Peterson-themed posts over the coming week as HD gears up for a jaunt to Sete for his Worldwide festival this weekend. Excited doesn’t cover it.

Cooly G – Playin Me

‘Playin Me’ is the soon-to-be-discharged debut album from South Londoner Cooly G and all signs are pointing towards a heavyweight LP. Released on Hyperdub (iconic home to innovative artists like Kode 9, Burial and Zomby) on July 17th, it marks the next stage in the evolution of her brand of broken house and UK Funky. Anyone that can work in a cover of Coldplay’s ‘Trouble’ onto a Hyperdub release is pushing some boundaries somewhere.

Out of the tracks already floating around the ether, we particularly like ‘Landscapes’, a woozy tour of her vocal skills and post-garage beats. The no-frills sound reflects its origins in her home studio (or ‘living room’ as she calls it) and has pleasant echoes of her early work that hooked us in, including the masterful ‘Love Dub’.

The official release party for ‘Playin Me’ is the insanely well-appointed Bloc festival, which tells you all you need to know about Cooly G’s direction of travel…
