Top 5 Tracks of the Week

1. DJ Yellow – Ride The Rhythm (Ian Pooley Remix): Ian Pooley adds his Midas touch to this Marshall Jefferson cover from Paris-based DJ Yellow. Compost Records doing the business on this party-starter.

2. Joe Goddard – Music Is The Answer: Joe Goddard’s sophomore solo album ‘Electric Lines’ is coming out on 21st April on Greco-Roman/Domino, and with tunes this catchy it’s certainly one to look out for. For the Londoners amongst you, catch his next solo live show at Heaven on 4th May.

3. Thundercat – Show You The Way (feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins): Thundercat dropped this smooth-as-you-like number featuring the legendary Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald earlier on in the week. It’s a little precursor to his hefty global tour and star-filled LP due out in March – Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell are a just a few of the names featured on the team sheet. Stay tuned.

4. Yaki Incipient – Cracked: This is the second release on new label South Street (see Urulu’s offering for the first) and it’s penned by Yaki Incipient, supposedly an already ‘prominent Dutch house and techno artist’. Mystery aliases aside, the tune’s a thumper and we can’t get enough of the infectious disco loop.

5. Marquis Hawkes – The Burning Light: Marquis Hawkes returns to Aus Music on 10th February with ‘The Sweet Temptation’ EP. ‘The Burning Light’ is the first taster of five tracks in total and it’s sounding euphoric.

Mix of the week’s from London-based Renata and her offering to the Gottwood mix series, just over sixty minutes of balearic goodness, global flavours and chugging house:

Thundercat – Oh Sheit it’s X

Disco is coming, you can feel it in the air.
If you’re reading this from the UK, you may have noticed a round, bright object in the sky the past few days. Do not be alarmed. We find this warming orb to go particularly well with some funky basslines and happy-go-lucky lyrics. Following Skream, Daft Punk in the best queue ever is Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat. His new one, from the Flying Lotus-produced ‘Apocolypse’ LP, is perfect sunkissed listening. Enjoy ‘Oh Sheit It’s X’ with the slightly more pensive but no less good ‘Heartbreaks + Setbacks’ below:

We promise that this review is in no way influenced by Stephen’s amazing facial hair, or the endorphin rush of ‘Oh Sheit’s subject matter…

Hello lunchtime viewing…

Red Bull Music Academy are expanding their output yet again, this time with a web-documentary series, H∆SHTAG$. We’ll excuse the slightly (very) silly name as Episode 1, which deals with the burst of recent contemporary R&B, is actually pretty interesting. How To Dress Well, Miguel and The Weeknd producer Zodiac all offer their thoughts on this renaissance and its roots and implications. Zodiac has also donated a track to the cause, and it’s lovely listening. All stuttering beats and twisted vocals.

Future episodes are said to include interviews with TNGHT, Mount Kimbie, Flying Lotus and Main Attrakionz so we’ll certainly be watching this particular space.

What a multi-media post.

The Underachievers – The Mahdi

Smooth vibes here from New York’s The Underachievers. Noisey have premiered the video to their latest, ‘The Mahdi’, from their forthcoming mixtape ‘Indigoism’ out 1st February, and it’s a groove with a conscience.

Affiliated with Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label, they’re ones to watch. Not even because they’re going to be big, they’re just mint.

If you want to REALLY feel like you’re missing out, The Underacheivers also crop up in this Noisey vid about the launch of The LongLiveA$AP Tour:

fLako – Mating Dance

fLako has graced these pages before with some repping from older heads but this young Chilean, still in the up and coming phase of his producing life, is now coming to the fore with a new EP, ‘Eclosure’, released this week on London label Five Easy Pieces.
Mating Dance’ is quite literally a jazzy little number, starting with some off-beat instrumentals before seguing into more familiar riddims:
Here’s another cut from the EP, ‘Honey Drips‘, reinforcing the Flying Lotus comparisons:
‘Mating Dance’ is available to download for free from xlr8r and we advise stocking up on this guy’s tunes now, they’re only going to get more sought after…
