SOHN @ Gorilla, Manchester

HD took a trip up North to catch SOHN play live last night at Manc underground venue Gorilla.  Amidst all the Warehouse Project-related chaos in Manchester during the winter months, Gorilla will play host to some of the most exciting talents in electronic music, including Dan Shake and Bondax, and it’s a venue well worth checking out.

Originally born in South London, Christopher Taylor a.k.a SOHN relocated to Vienna in 2012 and his music reflects perfectly the difference between the two cities. He pairs hectic soundscapes with lonely vocal stretches, not afraid to leave seemingly endless silences for the audience to wonder what’s to come. Melancholy is a consistent theme throughout, with his sorrowful vocals at the heart of the music, but it’s soulful too and songs like ‘Lights’ are borderline groovy.

This mix of tranquillity and chaos in his music translated amazingly into a live performance, not least because he shows himself to be an incredible musician. He began with more down-tempo numbers such as ‘Bloodflows’ and ‘Oscillate’ and, after a pause and a warning of what was to come, he ramped things up in the second half, belting out ‘The Wheel’ to the crowd’s delight. Backed by a stunning lights show, SOHN provided a visual and audio delight.

Sadly he’s now embarking on a three month world tour but after last night, could it be worth a trip to Brooklyn next month?

SOHN – Bloodflows

Given that we’ve been listening to ‘The Wheel’, SOHN’s breakout hit from last year, preeeeetty much non-stop since it crossed our paths, it’s always a pleasure to hear about new tunes from the London (née Vienna) producer – and especially when they’re slow-build scene-setters like this one; ‘Bloodflows’ is out in June on 4AD and has a lovely video to go with it:

And, because you’ve been so good recently, here’s ‘The Wheel’ to enjoy. Again.

SOHN remixes

SOHN blew us away last year with his debut single ‘The Wheel’ [insert joke about reinventing said wheel here], and he’s continued to hone his sound with some top, top remixes.

First up is a dark and brooding rework of LA vocalist Banks’s ‘Before I Ever Met You’. Banks was last seen on these pages collaborating with UK Funky maestro Lil Silva so she’s got a serious nose for talent.

We were lucky enough to catch Laura Mvula as part of Giles Peterson’s 6Music live sessions t’other week and, whilst she needs no help being brilliant, a pared down, sensual remix by SOHN doesn’t hurt anyone…

Keep it up.

Maribou State – Rituals

Newly signed to Counter Records, an imprint of Ninja Tune, Maribou State have given us a taste of their upcoming album ‘Portraits’. It’s the duo’s first full-length but they’ve stayed true to their ambient, psychedelic sound throughout a series of EPs and ear-catching remixes (remember this cracker?).

Rituals shows off their ability to combine moody vocal dubs, rolling breakbeats and even a tense guitar solo to dramatic effect. They join the SOHNs, James Blakes and Gold Pandas of this world in being able to craft an atmosphere without needing to overwork a thumping bassline or a strained vocal.

Luckily for all the Londoners, the duo will be dropping into Oslo Hackney on March 26th before heading stateside. Not one to miss.

‘Portraits’ is out on Counter Records on June 1st.

Oceaán – Grip

Like your electronic music full of glitches, ethereal build-ups and minimal break-downs? Looking for a new favourite artist? No worries, HD has you sorted. Manchester-based producer Oceaán is a star on the rise, having caught the eye of Radio 1 big dogs Huw Stephens, Phil Taggart and guest resident SOHN.

His latest release ‘Grip’, premiered on SOHN’s show a few weeks back and comparisons abound to James Blake. Once you get into his only EP released so far, it’s not hard to see why. A choirboy from an early age, it’s his soulful vocals that bind the music together and will no doubt be a powerful presence in his new live show.

Oceaán is signed to Chess Club Records, forming part of a seriously talented family including Swim Deep and . He is currently touring Europe with his new live show, but he promises us he’ll be back in the UK soon. File this under ‘one-to-watch’.

Sylas – Hollow

London-based label Aesop have established a decent rep now – in their short lifespan they’ve released singles from Wayward, SOHN, Gent Mason and TALA. Next up is London-based Sylas.

‘Hollow’ is their first offering, a dramatic and intriguing listen. Obvious comparisons may be drawn to stars from the experimental electronic landscape such as James Blake and the aforementioned SOHN, but who really cares if it sounds this good:

We don’t know a lot about Sylas, besides the fact that one half of the duo has been perfecting his production skills under the watchful eye of no other than Brian Eno. He helped produce ‘Someday World’, Eno’s collaborative album with Karl Hyde. He’s also rumoured to have worked with Sinead O’Connor and Damon Albarn, amongst others…

Learning from the best – one to watch, wethinks.

Wayward – Love Jones

Wayward are a London-based duo who have been producing tunes for a while but have finally got their début single release in the form of ‘Love Jones’. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for a Tuesday afternoon.

Similar to other tracks on their Soundcloud, this isn’t totally original. The track is centred around the soulful falsettos of Eddie Kendricks, he from the Temptations. But the vocal loop works magnificently with the progression of the tune. A hearty bassline and delightful piano melodies rise throughout, but it’s not until three and a half minutes in when you realise this song’s got something really special.

Aesop are releasing this one (check out releases from SOHN and Gent Mason on the London-based label of the moment) – you can get it on iTunes now or on vinyl come the 2nd December.

Go like these guys on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, big ones to watch wethinks.

Gent Mason – Head

Aesop be killin it, and we’re not talking fables.

Brand new label Aesop, who’s first release was the FANTASTIC ‘The Wheel’ by SOHN, have produced a stunning number two (stop it) with this release from London boy Gent Mason.

‘Eden’ and its B-side ‘Head’ are syrupy, Timbaland-esque productions with more than a nod to his hip hop and RnB tastes. If you like what you hear, the release hits the shelves 7th October.

Having caused a ripple of excitement (*ahem*) with the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs-produced single ‘Warm Water’ a few months back, Banks returns much to our delight with her new single ‘Waiting Game’.

The youngster from LA is hot property. She’s picking up fans left right and centre with her sultry vocals and laid-back atmospherics. She’s about to embark on the tour of her life too, supporting The Weeknd in North America. To further amplify her imminent rise to super stardom, the uber-up-and-coming Austrian star SOHN was behind the production on this one:

S O H N – The Wheel

If you’ve not heard of him already, allow us to introduce you to S O H N. The blogosphere is currently going bananas over this multi-instrumentalist’s unique and powerful electronica. Feast your ears on his debut single ‘The Wheel’ and you’ll see why. He creates a dense bed of atmospherics and peppers it with his intriguing vocals. At times haunting, at times angelic, he blends together a whole host of sounds and we can’t wait to hear more. ‘The Wheel’ is out now on the similarly fresh label Aesop.
