Laura Mvula

It’s that time of year again when a faint rumbling alerts you to the ‘next big thing’ polls stampeding across the horizon, cramming your senses with predictions for the ‘sound of 2013’. Make life simple for yourself, let us do the hard work.

Having heard more and more of Laura Mvula’s presence on the web and the radio, it seems silly not to start the claims now; this girl’s worth looking out for. The stylish and classically trained singer has recently been working with Tom Elmhirst (multi-Grammy award winner for his work with Adele and Amy Winehouse, swag) in New York on her debut album  She’s also signed to RCA, one of Sony’s labels. Their roster reads like a who’s who of popular entertainment. A for Alicia Keys, B for Beyonce, all the way down to Whitney.

So it seems the Birmingham-based singer is in good hands. The two tracks we’ve heard to date are fantastic. Her music’s got a soulful and timeless feel, tempting you with what’s to come next year…

If you’re currently mooching around in London, she’s supporting Fatoumata Diawara this Thursday at the Village Underground. Go listen to 2013.

Hissy Fit – She’s In The Club

Canada-based producer Hissy Fit has carved out an emotive summer thumper. Remixing West Midlands born Laura Mvula’s ‘She’ with a catchy, garagey beat, excellent sampling and a tune that retains all of the pensiveness of the original.

It’s the first time we’ve posted about Mathew Hiscock’s work, but if you like what you hear, then delve a little deeper and you find the Montrealer has form in the area of tuneful beats, with the title track from last year’s ‘Heat Wave’ EP being a good example. You could also do worse than spend 4:27 listening to ‘Buried’, which is taken from the same release. Hissy Fit’s remix of Laura Mvula’s ‘She’ is available for free download here.

SOHN remixes

SOHN blew us away last year with his debut single ‘The Wheel’ [insert joke about reinventing said wheel here], and he’s continued to hone his sound with some top, top remixes.

First up is a dark and brooding rework of LA vocalist Banks’s ‘Before I Ever Met You’. Banks was last seen on these pages collaborating with UK Funky maestro Lil Silva so she’s got a serious nose for talent.

We were lucky enough to catch Laura Mvula as part of Giles Peterson’s 6Music live sessions t’other week and, whilst she needs no help being brilliant, a pared down, sensual remix by SOHN doesn’t hurt anyone…

Keep it up.
