Weval LP

Continuing their exploration into slow-burning, emotive electronica, Dutch duo Weval have just dropped two more dreamy soundscapes ahead of their debut LP, due for release on Kompakt on 10th June.

We also highly recommend trying to catch their live show at some point this year. Kicking off with the formidable ‘Gimme Some’, their live set from Nuits Sonores looked pure class.

Agoria – Baptême EP

Come get baptised:

French techno producer Agoria has marked his Kompakt debut with this ‘Baptême EP’ and it’s emotional. The man himself says it represents “a lot of changes in my personal life these last two years. It signals my ‘second life’.” Heavy stuff. Either way, ‘Baptême’ and the remix by DJ Tennis and The Rapture’s Luke Jenner provide 20 minutes of emotional techno that are worth investing in, the man’s had a tough few years yeah.

Skream – Still Lemonade

Definitely one to be excited about. The journey that has taken Oliver Jones a.k.a. Skream through disco remixes and house rollers appears to have reached its destination with an album due out later this year on the mighty Crosstown Rebels. ‘Still Lemonade’ is the first single from the upcoming LP which sees Jones push himself into much darker territory.

The track shows Jones’s impressive versatility, building through emotive melodies and fidgety synths to a spine-tingling break down around the four minute mark. It’s a cracker which wouldn’t look out of place on a Kompakt compilation or at the peak of a mind-bending Dixon set. After flying through the genres in recent years, Skream seems to have settled in the realms of melodic techno. In the immortal words of the man himself, “this is the shit. It’s dark, it’s going off, it’s dancefloor as fuck.”

Weval – Easier EP

Weval‘s ‘Gimme Some’ has been been on constant loop at HD HQ, with all of them hand-claps and it’s subtle, slow build-up. It’s strangely addictive.

The full ‘Easier’ EP from the Dutch duo is now available to stream and it’s well worth a visit. Full of catchy electronic meanderings, there’s a dash of Caribou’s Swim about it. It’s been a big year for Kompakt with releases from Dauwd, Marc Romboy and Barnt, but this understated affair from Weval shouldn’t go unseen. It’s difficult to choose a favourite track from all four gems. Quite like that artwork, too.

Audion – Dem Howl Feat. Troels Abrahamsen

‘Dem Howl’ by Audion promises to be a big release for Kompakt come November 3rd.

As Audion, Mathew Dear has explored the darker side of his sound since 2004. ‘Dem Howl’ features the vocals of Danish singer Troels Abrahamsen. Whilst the vox don’t sit well with everyone, judging by the ever-insightful comments section on Soundcloud, we think they add a trembling layer of emotion over the dark swell underneath.

For those who just want to get lost in Audion’s deep fog, vocal free, then fear not; the release features an instrumental, as well as remixes from Michael Mayer and Joris Voorn.

A lot of people happy about this one.

Human Drizzle: The Playlist, October 2014

We’re already steaming through October so it’s high time we got our monthly playlist up and running. As the festival season’s well out the way, the output of new music has come through thick and fast.

The last few weeks has seen Dauwd return to Kompakt Records, Breach teaming up with Kelis, Chris Malinchak teaming up with MNEK and PMR Records launch Beat Club, a new sub-label they describe as a ‘playground for new young talent’.

We’ve squeezed in two tracks from newbies Sylas and we’ve even whacked in Bicep’s recent Essential Mix at the very end. Just cos it’s that good.

Enjoy, people.

WEVAL – Gimme Some

This one’s layered.

‘Gimme Some’ is the totally infectious track by a Dutch pair called Weval who have recently signed to Kompakt. It’s the lead track from their forthcoming EP on the label and we can’t to hear the rest of it. Check out their Half Age EP from last year on Atomnation.

Dauwd – Saleh

For those of you lucky enough to have been at Canavan’s for Human Drizzle presents back in May*, you’ll no doubt agree that South London producer Dauwd knows his way around a tune.

His second appearance on Kompakt this year comes in the form of ‘Saleh’, due out on October 20th. As intricate as his last release on the label, the excellent ‘Kindlinn’ EP, ‘Saleh’ furthers his rep as a romantic techno tunesmith with this six-minute gem.

*Talking of Human Drizzle Presents, the next one’s been a long time coming. We’re just finalising details for it now and it’s going to be big. Block out Friday 5th December.

Kölsch – Papageno

There has been a deluge of unbelievably good tracks coming to our attention recently, and there doesn’t seem to be any let up in sight (cue two months of absolute guff on these pages…)

Dane/Danish-man/Denmarkian Kölsch has just popped his new EP for Kompakt out on the web for public consumption. The only thing we can say is that both of these tunes are out of this world.

We struggle at the best of times to find the concise phraseology that best defines the music we post. This is no exception. ‘Papageno’ ft Waa Industry is a bonkers electro-ey-house assault on the senses, before turning into a thing of rare, shimmering beauty.

The B-side ‘Cassiopeia’ is a much more straight-laced affair, with Kölsch drawing heavily from the brilliant ‘Der Alte’. Here though, we have the addition of strings, courtesy of Gregor Schwellenbach. We’d be worried about you if you didn’t get a warm feeling at 02:05 when the beat comes back in.

And we’ll just put this here for anyone who’s interested…

Totally magnificent. Available on 30th June thanks to Kompakt. And on this evidence, get out to see Kölsch asap.
