Four Tet – The Track I’ve Been Playing That People Keep Asking About And That Joy Used In His RA Mix And Daphni Played On Boiler Room

We did kinda post this track because of the ingenious song title, but in doing so it does allow scope for a few nods. Firstly, and quite obviously, the excellent Resident Advisor Mix Joy Orbison did back in October Twenty Twelve:

Secondly, you guessed it, Daphni aka Caribou played it in his Boiler Room set last year too. Now if you’re a fan of the above Four Tet track, you NEED Daphni’s fantastically infectious Jiaolong LP in your life. Here are our two choice cuts from it, enjoy.

Leon Vynehall – Midnight Over Rainbow Road

The team sheet involved in the Gerd Janson-curated ‘Musik For Autobahns 2’ compilation is something to behold. Joy Orbison, Lauer, Fort Romeau, Bicep and many more, all penning tracks that have been inspired by trips on the Autobahn between Frankfurt and Heidelberg.

Apparently Leon Vynehall undertook extensive research of the BAB 5 to come up with ‘Midnight On Rainbow Road’ and boy do we thank him for it. M.O.R.R is over six minutes of electronic bliss and is a welcome return from LV. Check out the preview for the whole album here and pre-order a copy from Rush Hour here.

Lauer – Borndom LP

We’ve been patiently waiting for Lauer’s second album since we were blown away by the superb ‘Stigma’ last year.

Released on the Munich-based Permanent Vacation label, ‘Borndom’ is out now and we highly recommend you going out and spending all your hard-earned cash on it. It’s an 80s-influenced, synth-heavy piece of work, and we’ve picked out our favourite tracks from the LP to soundtrack the excitements as the bank holiday creeps in.

If you like what you hear and you’re London-based, we highly recommend heading down to Oval Space on 12th June. Lauer is playing in a splendid line-up that consists of Joy Orbison, Gerd Janson and Prins Thomas. Tickets here.

Barnt – Chappell

Chances are, if Joy Orbison and Tim Sweeney get behind a record, it’s going to be a cracker. Barnt’s ‘Chappell’ was first aired in Joy O’s essential mix back in July (well worth a listen) and has since featured in Sweeney’s Beats in Space 15th Anniversary compilation. It’s an intense percussive workout that alternates between powerful stabs and the full range of clicks and snares. Mesmerising stuff.

Barnt is the latest signing to Joy O and Will Bankhead’s label ‘Hinge Finger’, with ‘His Name’ becoming the 5th vinyl-only release. The B-side is pretty tasty too, yet more weird and wonderful drum-machine sounds.

Beacons Festival 2014

The Yorkshire Dales don’t see nothing like it.

In two weeks time we’re fortunate enough to be going to Beacons Festival. It takes place on the FUNkirk Estate in Skipton from 7th – 10th August and is without doubt one of the stand-outs of the year in the UK festival calendar.

Beacons Logo 2014

It’s remarkably only in its third year, and 2014 sees the boutique celebration of music and art host the biggest line-up yet. With stages hosted by RA, Red Bull Music Academy, Noisey, Flux and many more, the range of talent is ludicrous.

The line-up’s bursting at the seams. Dixon and Mano Le Tough, The Fall and British Sea Power, Daniel Avery, Huxley and Joy Orbison. Hot new acts like Wayward, Beaty Heart and Toy feature, as well as stalwarts Crazy P Soundsystem, Greg Wilson and Jon Hopkins. Not to mention Jackmaster, Darkside and Dusky.

The list goes on. And on. And on. Check it out here.

Beacons Festival 2013

The atmosphere at Beacons is a true delight and with light installations, stalls, fairs and film screenings (Shane Meadows gave a riveting Q&A on his hit film ‘Made Of Stone’ last year) there really is something for everyone.

More information can be found here and more importantly tickets can be bought here. If there’s one tip we have for August, we highly recommend you hit the north.

As usual, to whet the appetite, we’ve compiled a special Beacons playlist for your listening pleasure. Get excited:

Hudson Mohawke – Pleasure

We apologise in advance for the intense feeling of missing out when you’ve read this post.

Following a limited run vinyl release back in 2011, ‘Pleasure’ is a Janet Jackson-flecked piece of joy from Numbers man Hudson Mohawke. Please, please listen to it before kicking off your Bank Holiday weekender:

The imprint that put out this goodtimes tune was the specially created label, Pleasure Principle. This has now morphed into the all-star surfing holiday festival in Newquay that kicks off next month, and ‘Pleasure’ is a teaser for that. The three days are jam-packed with essential listening, not least HD regulars from Joy Orbison, TNGHT and Rustie. To assuage the FOMOs, get a ticket here or try your luck with FACT’s ticket giveaway here.

In case it wasn’t clear, we wish we were going.

Eastern Electrics Festival

This weekend sees the arrival of the much-anticipated Eastern Electrics Festival. On show will be some of the hottest talent in electronic music today, with a fair few stars of tomorrow thrown in too. What better opportunity to have a little look at them?

The Black Atlantic Stage looks exciting, with Joy O and Julio Bashmore pulling in the crowds – but attention should be drawn to Irish duo Bicep, who’ve been causing a storm throughout 2012. They first started playing out the track below six months ago, but now it’s getting a proper release in September and appeared online this week. We hope you agree, there’s not a lot wrong with it. We hope to be hearing a lot more of those piano keys this summer, starting tomorrow.

Although Main Stage headliners Azari & III will be their usual bundle of excitement, we’re also interested in the duo that is Dusky. If you’ve not got the ‘Flo Jam EP‘, it is definitely worth a listen. Deep house and great percussion abound, and the infectious cut below will be ringing through your ears for days to come.

Other popular choices will most certainly be the fun(ky) Tensnake and cult heroes Crazy P and Boddika (whose work with Pearson Sound and Joy O is in full flow). Yet top of our wish list is Huxley. Brought to you by 2020 Vision, he’s penned two of our favourite tracks of the year. One previously blogged, one below. With such an eclectic range of brilliant DJs on show tomorrow, Eastern Electrics is set to be a highlight of the summer festival season (unless it rains all day and/or gets cancelled at the eleventh hour, leaving tens of thousands of people stuck in North Greenwich).
