William Onyeabor vs Hot Chip – Atomic Bomb (John Talabot remix)

Like a party where all your favourite people turn up:

First you had William Onyeabor, the Nigerian electro-funk artist brought to a new audience by a Luaka Bop compilation a couple of years’ back. Then you had Hot Chip, doing a cover of Onyeabor’s ‘Atomic Bomb’ last year. And finally, look who’s shown up, it’s John Talabot with a remix of Hot Chips’s cover, all in time for a Record Store Day release*. That’s some tune/party.

Whilst we’re here, you may remember another track from the covers album…

*The Soundcloud says it’s for RSD in 2018 but we have a hunch it might be an April Fool’s day gag…

Hot Chip – Dark & Stormy

It’s a single, but not as we know it.

Hot Chip premiered a new track, ‘Dark & Stormy’, on Zane Lowe’s show last night, with a release date of July 22nd. Rather unusually, the “single” will be eight tracks long and have some things old and some things new on there. Dare we suggest there’s a few familiar faces to our assiduous readers?

Basically, it’s a new song from the masterful Hot Chip, teamed with a collection of their best bits and bobs since 2012’s ‘In Our Heads’. Can’t argue with that.

New Build – Pour It On (Table Man Remix)

Lose yourself in this DFA-inspired collaboration:

As a Christmas gift, DFA have put out a free remix from New Build, the next move from two members of Hot Chip (Al & Felix, not these two reprobates). UK house producer Table Man spins ‘Pour it On’ out into a faintly tropical but low-key piano house track. It’s lovely.

Tensnake – Feel Of Love (Joe Goddard Remix)

Joe Goddard’s back adding his magic touch to Tensnake’s new single ‘Feel Of Love’. The German producer originally made the tune with heavyweights Jamie Lidell and Jacques Lu Cont, and now the 2 Bears and Hot Chip producer has stretched it out and soaked the tune in carnival vibes. It goes on and on, and it still isn’t long enough.*

Jokes vid for the original too:

*If you’re London-based and want that little bit more, we highly recommend getting down to The Nest this Friday night for Goddard’s weighty 5-hour set. It’s already sold out but we hear there’s plenty of tickets on the door.

Joe Goddard – Endless Love feat. Betsy

Here’s the title track of Mr Joe Goddard’s brand new EP, ‘Endless Love’.

Being the fan of collaboration that the Hot Chip and 2 Bears member is, he’s roped in Betsy to provide the vocal on this hypnotic house number. We don’t know a lot about her, but her soulful tones can also be heard on the sister track to ‘Endless Love’, ‘Make It Right’.  They sit nicely alongside three other dancefloor-inspired tracks on the ‘Endless Love’ EP, which is out now on Greco-Roman. Grab a copy here.

Welcome back Joe, summer anthem in the making wethinks.

Bondax – Giving it All (Joe Goddard Remix)

Joe Goddard, he of Hot Chip and The 2 Bears, has gone and shown us/the world why he’s also one of our favourite remixers out there. You know, besides the two successful groups he’s in.

He’s stepped into a crowded field and reworked ‘Giving it All’ by Lancaster’s finest, Bondax. This is in advance of guesting at their debut London show (together with LOADS of other HD faves):

If you like the rhythmic, chiming flow of Goddard’s work then enjoy these two. We’re going to pop them both on right now:

Dirty Projectors – The Socialites (Joe Goddard Remix)

It’s been a while since we’ve heard the busy bee that is Joe Goddard flex his remixing skills. The man who is one half of 2 Bears and one fifth of Hot Chip has captured Amber Coffman’s quirky vocals beautifully on this remix. It’s out on Domino and sits nicely on a Dirty Projectors’ remix EP, also featuring AlunaGeorge and Falty DL. Tasty.

Nneka – Shining Star (Joe Goddard Remix)

Nneka first came to our attention when Chase & Status propelled her into the public eye by remixing her track ‘Heartbeat’ back in 2009. Now, just after the release of her new album ‘Soul Is Heavy’, her track ‘Shining Star‘ has been remixed by someone who may just propel her a little further.

Who better to give your work some nip and tuck than King Midas himself, Joe Goddard. Most of the things he’s done over the last 18 months have been nothing short of stellar. He has released a host of remixes, penned one of the biggest tunes of last year in ‘Gabriel’, produced consistent bangers with 2 Bears, and remained a key member of the Hot Chip crew.

This remix may be a sum total of 9 minutes and 2 seconds long. But bear (ahem) with it. Once you’re in, it’s absolutely stunning and could be a contender for our favourite tune of the year thus far. The accompanying army of percussion he’s embedded into this soulful pop tune turns it into an uplifting, pensive, progressive and perfect song. Enjoy.

Close – Wallflower Ft. Fink (Huxley Remix)

New Huxley remix for you.

And it’s an absolute gem, even if the big guy says so himself. He’s got all dark and moody on us by reworking Close feat. Fink – ‘Wallflower‘. Close is Will Saul‘s pet project, and Wallflower sees him team up with Aus Music compadre Fink. It’s taken from Close’s second album, ‘Getting Closer’, a fairly well received release from June this year.

Whilst Aus Music and Simple Records, Will’s other label, both promote the underground house and techno talent in the UK, Close is a more commercially focussed music project, with support from a number of big names like ScubaTanner Ross and Fat Freddie’s Drop singer, Joe Dukie. The clear aim of Close was to create an album, not just a selection of tracks, and give it a level of sophistication that required repeat listens, so says Will.

Whilst the original, like much of the album, is carefully paced, tidy and lushly textured, Huxley has taken the mood down a notch or two, building on the atmosphere that’s already present, resulting in a crisp but heavy deep house remix. We think it fits equally well with the early stages of a club set as it does with the late night bus ride down the Walworth road, as you repeatedly question whether or not treating yourself to a cheese and chips from Golden Grill would make your mother proud.

And it’s not the only top remixing being done off the back of ‘Getting Closer’. The Dusky and Midland remixes of ‘My Way’ feat. Joe Dukie are both excellent. Despite being based on the same original release, both produces create contrasting sounds, whilst also stamping their own easily-identifiable presence on the track. A good few things to go on here then, especially if you like your music a touch deeper than most.
