Jon Hopkins Essential Mix

After a fairly big weekend that saw us take in Hyde’s 1st birthday party at the brilliant Oval Space on Saturday night, we’re in need of a something to zone out to today. Luckily for us, and you if you’re taking a similarly tentative approach to this Monday, composer/producer/performer/DJ extraordinaire Jon Hopkins was on the Essential Mix on Friday night.

It’s a superb selection, that includes some brilliant tracks from Daniel Avery, Recondite, James Holden and this stunning Moderat remix of Hopkins’ ‘Abandon Window’.

Bicep – Essential Mix

Flexing their muscles again, Essential Mix called up Bicep a couple of weeks back and it’s just hit Soundcloud:

They’ve called it ‘club-focused’ and that serves nicely as an umbrella for their wide-ranging selections. Get stuck in.

And oh boy are we in for a treat this weekend:

Can U Dance – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

Selector superduo Can U Dance swung by Glastonbury on their European tour last week, and blasted out an hour of music to get you PUMPED:

Put out there as an Essential Mix, it’s Oneman and Jackmaster at their very best, racing through tunes from INXS to The Streets and clearly enjoying their new project. In fairness, who wouldn’t? It’s basically an opportunity for them to play wall-to-wall bangers at festivals all summer.

Radio 1 Essential Mix – Future Stars of 2013

A little tip of the cap to Pete Tong and his team for their special Future Stars of 2013 series of the Essential Mix. Thus far they’ve entertained some real delights. Spawning from the really quite excellent French Express label, they kicked the year off with American DJ Perseus and Sweden’s Jonas Rathsman, who collectively provided a snapshot mix of what French Express are about. Go no further than Chris Malinchak’s ‘You’re So Good To Me’ to see how feel-good it is. The kind people at the super-hot label have crafted a non-BBC version, click here for the free download.

They’ve also invited two heavyweights from the UK bass scene down to partake, Duke Dumont and George Fitzgerald. Both continuing their rise to superstardom, their mixes are littered with names that are making waves in the underground electronic scene, and both are quite simply, essential listening.

Tomorrow night is the fourth and final part of the series and will feature Friction’s one-to-watch in the world of drum and bass, Metrik.

Rustie – BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix

Something a little longer for you to plug into this fine Monday. Radio 1’s Essential Mix has been undergoing somewhat of a renaissance over the past couple of years, fuelled by a new generation of young producers and DJs pushing the Saturday night/Sunday morning institution past, in the most respectful way possible, the stalwarts of old.

The last two sum up why it is now compulsory listening for electronic music fans. The multi-talented and oft-hyped Nicolas Jaar has crafted a musical journey the weekend just gone, twisting together tunes from *NSYNC right through to Bill Calahan. This followed a joyous two hours from HD favourite Rustie. We’ve posted the Rustie one above as it’s right on the money with what we’re listening to right now, bringing the dulcet tones of Drake together with labelmate Hud Mo’s basslines and beats. It’ll pick you up.

Let us know if you think we plumped for the right one on twitter @humandrizzle. Either way, you get to hear Pete Tong doing his thing. The man LOVES dance music.

Aphrohead – Grown Man Cryy (Carl Craig ‘Brainy Grimlin’ Remix)

Ok, let’s get this Thursday started.

Aphrohead, aka Felix Da Housecat for all you 90s heads out there, has recently put out his first LP in over a decade and he’s pulled in the-man-who-needs-no-intro Carl Craig to rework one of the tracks, ‘Grown Man Cryy’.

The ‘Brainy Grimlin’ remix (us neither) is nine minutes of muscular techno that kicks into life with some old-fashioned bleeps at 4:40. Essentially, these two still very much have “it” and “it” is on full display here.

RÜFÜS DU SOL – Sundream (Classixx Remix)

Classixx are always an essential go to when the sun’s out. Their summery production is never amiss on any of their originals and they always add the feel-good factor to the work of others. No change here with their remix of Sydney-based Rufus Du Soul’s ‘Sundream’.

Appropriately titled, it may be just what the doctor ordered to settle into the week.
