HD took a trip across the channel last weekend for a night of muscular techno with Daniel Avery & pals.
Founded and co-designed by the unofficial deity of Lyon, Laurent Garnier, Le Sucre is a Lyonnais institution. It resides on the banks of the Rhône in the midst of the formerly industrial Confluences district, boasting a fifth floor terrace view over Lyon and the Alps behind.
Friday night saw Avery bring along long-time collaborator Volte Face and ‘master of the neo acid scene’ (not us) Tin Man. The latter stepped up and tested the sound system to its limit, dishing out intense soundscapes like his own ‘Stay Gold’.
Avery has become a regular in these parts, holding down a quarterly residency at Le Sucre and featuring in May’s Nuits Sonores festival. It’s easy to see why, with an eager crowd hanging off each of his elongated mixes as he veered from acid to ambient and back again. In the last hour, he ran through some of the biggest tracks of the year, most notably this terrifying cut from Nina Kraviz’s трип label.
The evening drew to a close with Avery’s ‘Drone Logic’ filling the room as familiar faces climbed the stage to give him a big ol’ hug. With a whole host of big names arriving in the new year, the home of King Laurent appears alive and well.
P.S HD’s journey through France’s electronic music hotspots continues (and ends) as we head to Grenoble to catch Motor City Drum Ensemble and Young Marco at La Belle Electrique. Should be a good’un.
