Yesterday the internet (almost) broke with excitement as Jai Paul appeared to release his feverishly-anticipated debut album. The tracks appeared on Bandcamp, with no promo, press release, statement from his label XL, nothing. Given the deliberately esoteric way in which he’s marketed himself thus far, this was perhaps no surprise – but Jai has this morning apparently explained that the album is an illegal leak following a laptop theft.
Either way, give it a listen above: if you like ‘Jasmine’ and ‘BTSTU’ (and why wouldn’t you?), you’re likely to love this. These tracks contain the same squelchy sonic experimentation and bittersweet vocals that made those tracks so exciting, and it’s something of a killer. Even if it wasn’t, it contains a Jennifer Paige cover – rendering most criticism redundant.
